I am a fan of Alternative energy as well. One seemingly interesting ETF is GEX, with 65% of its holding outside the US. They invest in wind, solar and other alt energies. I think if we see a boom in commodities, especially oil and natural gas, an ETF such as GEX is likely to follow. Plus, it pays some dividends, albeit it is kind of low right now. 

The entire commodities market seems primed for a pop. I definitely agree with Jim on going with index funds or ETFs that track certain indexes. Good protection against failures of single companies (or commodities).
